Ashley Kukay built Texture Salon by making deliberate choices about what the business should represent, whom it should serve, and how it could grow beyond her own work behind the chair.
She opened Ashley Curls KC in Olathe, Kansas, in 2022. Three years later, she moved into a larger space a couple of doors away, introduced the Texture Salon name, and created room for other stylists to learn, serve clients, and build businesses of their own.
Natural curls remain central to Texture’s identity. The specialty gives the salon a clear focus while shaping its client education, environment, and equipment decisions.
For National Women’s Small Business Month, Keller International is celebrating how Ashley turned her expertise into a woman-owned business designed to support clients, other stylists, and the life she wants to build.

Building Around a Clear Specialty
Ashley did not try to build a salon that offered everything to everyone. She built Texture around expertise, education, and a clear understanding of the clients she wanted to serve.
“I created Texture Salon to be a welcoming space where all textures are celebrated, with a special focus on natural curls.”
That specialty gives the business a recognizable identity. It also turns education into part of the client experience. Texture’s services are designed to help clients understand their hair, the techniques being used, and the steps they can take between appointments.
“Our curl services are about more than the finished look. We also help clients understand their hair and how to care for it at home. My goal is for them to leave feeling beautiful and capable of recreating their style themselves.”
Curls are the salon’s specialty, but confidence is part of what Ashley is building. Clients leave with a finished style and knowledge they can use after the appointment ends.

Growing Beyond Her Own Chair
The move from Ashley Curls KC to Texture Salon reflected a larger shift in the business. Ashley was no longer building only around the services she could personally provide. She was creating a place where other stylists could develop their skills, establish client relationships, and build businesses of their own.
“I’m most proud of seeing Texture grow beyond my own work behind the chair. It’s become a place where other stylists can build their businesses, continue learning, and share their talents.”
After ten years in the industry, creating those opportunities has become one of the most meaningful parts of ownership for Ashley.
Her expertise remains visible throughout Texture, but the business is no longer limited by her individual appointment schedule. That transition from practitioner to owner is one of the clearest signs of how far the company has grown.

Turning a Clear Vision Into a Place
Moving into a larger salon gave Ashley an opportunity to make Texture’s identity visible.
She drew inspiration from the warmth and character of 1990s Black beauty salons, then interpreted that influence through earthy colors, greenery, and artwork representing different hair textures.
“I wanted the space to feel inviting and intentional. Those choices help tell our story before a client even sits in the chair.”
The design is not separate from the business strategy. It helps clients understand what Texture values before a consultation begins. The salon feels specific because Ashley made choices rooted in the community she serves rather than following a generic salon formula.
Choosing Equipment That Supports the Business

Ashley selected Keller’s Savannah Salon Chairs, Illusion Dryer Chairs, and Liberty Box Hair Dryers for Texture.
The Savannah Salon Chair’s open-sided, upholstered design supports client comfort and easier cleaning while fitting the warm look Ashley chose for the salon.
“The chairs complement the warm, inviting look of the salon.”
The equipment is not there solely for appearance. Each piece has a role in the client experience and in the way Texture delivers its services every day.
Where the Specialty Shapes the Workflow

Texture’s hooded dryers play an especially important role in the salon’s curl-focused work.
“The hooded dryers are an important part of our curl services. They allow curls to dry and set without being disturbed, helping us create defined styles.”
This makes the drying stage part of Texture’s service model rather than an afterthought. The salon’s specialty influences not only the techniques its stylists use, but also the equipment required to deliver consistent results.
Keller offers professional hooded hair dryers and salon dryer chairs for services including hair setting, conditioning, and processing, with configurations available for different salon layouts.
At Texture, the Savannah chairs and hooded dryers connect the salon’s visual direction to its practical needs. The chairs establish consistent styling stations, while the dryers address a specific stage of caring for and defining curls.
Building a Business That Supports a Life
Ashley’s advice to other women is not to pursue growth for its own sake. She encourages them to think carefully about the kind of life their businesses are meant to support.
“Build a business that supports the life you want, and give yourself permission to make adjustments as you grow.”
That includes setting boundaries while continuing to care deeply about clients and team members. It also means investing in education, asking for help, and recognizing the value of one’s time and experience.
Ashley’s own path reflects that willingness to adjust. Ashley Curls KC became Texture Salon. A business centered on her personal work developed into a place where multiple stylists could learn, serve clients, and establish businesses of their own.
A Business Designed to Keep Evolving
Ashley’s path from Ashley Curls KC to Texture Salon shows how a business can evolve without losing the expertise that made it distinctive.
Her specialty still shapes the services, education, environment, and equipment inside Texture. What has changed is the scale of the opportunity. The business now supports clients, gives other stylists room to grow, and allows Ashley to lead beyond her own work behind the chair.
National Women’s Small Business Month recognizes the leadership, achievements, and economic contributions of women entrepreneurs throughout the United States. As a women-owned company, Keller International is proud to recognize owners like Ashley who use their expertise to create opportunities for other people.
Texture’s next chapter does not require abandoning what Ashley built first. It requires continuing to make thoughtful adjustments as the business, team, and vision grow.
